The 3 Types of Fire Alarm Systems for Commercial Buildings

You’re probably wondering what your options are to meet code and keep you building safe. Fire alarm systems vary by their nature of their network. Here are the 3 main types of fire alarms:

  1. Conventional Fire Alarm Systems – Conventional fire alarm systems have numbered “zones” that are hardwired to a central control panel. Conventional fire alarm systems allow for separate fire alarms to be installed throughout the various zones or units of your building.
  2. Intelligent Fire Alarms – Also known as “addressable fire alarm systems” or “smart systems,” Intelligent systems monitor all of the fire alarms in your building interdependently. With intelligent fire alarm systems, you can choose between manual or automatic settings. Each alarm in an intelligent systems has its own unique “address”, which provides visibility to the status and potential issues of each alarm. These systems are typically more expensive, but the monitoring features allow you to be more proactive about the protection of your property.
  3. Hybrid Fire Alarms – Also called “combination alarm systems” hybrid alarm systems work by incorporating features of both conventional and intelligent systems. Typically these are installed with favor given to the addressability of the intelligent fire alarms as well as the hardwired zone features of conventional alarms systems. Hybrid fire alarm systems are a good fit for those who require features of both systems in a single panel. When we do a site evaluation, we will make some recommendations for the fire alarm system that will work best for your building.

F.A.Q.

Here’s the list of questions we hear most often about fire alarms and smoke detectors. If you don’t see your question, drop us a line.

Does My Building Need a Fire Alarm System?

It Really depends on the buildings’ classification and the International Builders Code. Some building require manaual fire alarms while others will also require automatic sprinkler systems to extinguish a fire.

Do I Need My Fire Alarms Inspected?

Yes, you should have your fire alarms inspected each year per NFPA standards.

Does My Fire Alarm System Need To Be Monitored?

Yes,  you have sprinklers, it needs to be monitored. Alos, the fire alarm system should be checked annulally per NPFA standards.

Why Are My Smoke Detectors Beeping?

It’s more than likely a battery issue. Even hard-wired smoke detectors include a 9-volt backup battery. The battery kicks in if your building loses electricity. If that battery is running low, your detector alerts you with a high-pitched chirpping sound. It’s also possible that it’s a dust problem from construction or otherwise. Either way, it’s a good idea to have your smoke detectors inspected.

Are There Fees Associated with Fire Alarms?

Yes, there are fees associated with the installation of your fire alarm system. These fees are payable to the fire marshall. At NewVsion Security, we work directly with the fire marshall throughout the inspection and testing. We also pay the fire marshall the appropriate fees.

How Much Do Fire Alarm Systems Cost?

In a commercial building , your most basic fire alarm system is going to include smoke detectors, heat sensors, CO2 detectors and 24/7 monitoring. These fire alarm systems start at $2 to $3 per square foot while the more complex systems range from $4 to $6 per square foot.
